Quick answer

Choose JUNGLIA Okinawa if your party wants rides, forest courses and a full, active day, and choose the Churaumi Aquarium if you want Okinawa's sea life, a flexible visit and a gentler pace. They are different kinds of day, so the real question is which one suits your group. Most travellers with only one northern day should pick one and give it the whole day. Klook tickets for JUNGLIA cannot be cancelled once booked.

The short answer, by who is travelling

Pick by group, not by fame. A party of teenagers and adults who like thrill rides will get more from JUNGLIA Okinawa. A family whose children fall below the ride limits, a mixed-ability group or anyone who wants to see sea life should start with the Churaumi Aquarium. Travellers who dislike phone apps, lotteries and standing in the sun for hours will find the aquarium simpler. If you can only spare one day in the north, treat the choice as either-or, because each deserves a full day in its own way.

What the Churaumi Aquarium is

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium sits within the Ocean Expo Park in Motobu and opened on 1 November 2002. Its main tank, the Kuroshio Sea, is 35 m long, 27 m wide and 10 m deep and holds 7,500,000 litres. The viewing panel is 8.2 by 22.5 m and 60 cm thick. Whale sharks share the tank with manta rays and many other fish. Wikipedia lists about 11,000 animals from roughly 720 species and more than 3.5 million visitors a year, which tells you to expect company in the viewing hall.

Why the main tank is famous

Wikipedia says the Kuroshio Sea tank was the world's largest aquarium tank until the Georgia Aquarium surpassed it in 2005, and that it was the largest viewing panel of its kind when the aquarium opened. The aquarium is also trying to breed whale sharks in captivity, which no aquarium has achieved, and its record for a captive whale shark is an individual that lived there more than 29 years as of 2024. Across the site there are 77 tanks holding about 10,000 cubic metres of water.

What JUNGLIA Okinawa is

JUNGLIA Okinawa is a theme park in the Yanbaru forest of northern Okinawa, which opened on 25 July 2025. It is built around rides and courses: a safari-vehicle ride in which a T-Rex attacks, a glide over a forest valley, buggy courses and two suspension-bridge courses. Several of those attractions run on a same-day lottery in the park's app, and a paid Premium Pass adds priority access to named ones. Where the aquarium is a place you walk through, the park is a day you manage.

Side by side

The table sets the two against the questions that usually decide it. The main difference is control. At the aquarium you move from tank to tank at your own speed. At the park, the best attractions depend on lotteries, standby lines or a Premium Pass, and weather can pause rides. Neither is better in the abstract. The park suits people who enjoy planning a day around attractions, and the aquarium suits people who want to show up and look. A group can enjoy both, but only if each member accepts the style of day that comes with the choice.

If it rains

Weather affects the two days differently. At JUNGLIA Okinawa, umbrellas are not permitted on rides, the park advises rainwear, and Tree-top Trekking may be suspended without notice because of weather. One visitor account says afternoon downpours soaked footwear and made a suspension course slippery, and the Klook ticket cannot be cancelled. The aquarium is built around tanks, so a wet day changes less about what you came to see. If your dates are fixed and the forecast is uncertain, that favours the aquarium. If you choose the park anyway, pick a date with room to move and plan for rain gear, and treat any fine weather as a bonus.

Doing both on one trip

Both sit in the north, the aquarium in Motobu and the park in Yanbaru, so one base in the north can serve both. Do not squeeze them into one day unless the park visit is a Quick Visit ticket, which is the only version designed as a short stop: it includes one ride on a listed standby attraction and has no time limit on your stay. Otherwise give the park its own day and keep the aquarium for another, perhaps the day you travel in or out.

Kouri Island and the Ocean Tower

Kouri Island lies off the northern coast of the main island and is linked to Yagaji Island by a bridge of roughly two kilometres. Kouri Ocean Tower stands on a hill there, with views from 82 m above sea level. After you enter, an automated cart takes you through subtropical gardens to the tower. The first floor holds the Kouri Island Museum, the second and third floors are indoor observation floors, and the Ocean Deck on the roof may be limited by weather. It is a compact stop that pairs well with a drive across the bridge.

Nago Pineapple Park, and a stop to leave in the south

Nago is noted for pineapples, along with cement, rice and sugarcane, and the Pineapple Park on Route 84 is a popular attraction where visitors learn about pineapple cultivation and pineapple wine. It is a short, easy stop between larger sights. Okinawa World is different: it is a theme park in Nanjo, in southern Okinawa, with a traditional Ryukyuan village showing glass making, Eisa dancing and habu snakes. It sits at the opposite end of the island from the northern stops, so it belongs with a Naha-based day.

How to book each one

On the Klook pages, JUNGLIA Okinawa shows several packages: a 1-day park ticket, a quick-visit ticket with one ride, and Premium Pass add-ons. All of them cannot be cancelled once booked and are valid on the selected date. The aquarium, Kouri Ocean Tower, Okinawa World and Nago Pineapple Park each have their own Klook pages with their own terms, so read the terms on each page before paying. Choose the date for the park first, since it is the least flexible, and fit the other stops around it.

Who this isn't for

This comparison will not help if you already know you want one of the two. It is also less useful for travellers basing themselves in southern Okinawa with no plan to go north, since the north is a long day from Naha. If you cannot decide, the cheapest way to settle it is to decide what a good day looks like for the least adventurous member of the party, and book the one that suits them. Everyone else can adapt to a gentler day more easily than the reverse, and a calmer day is easier to repeat if you come back to the north another time.

Frequently asked questions

Is JUNGLIA Okinawa better than the Churaumi Aquarium?

Neither is better in the abstract. The park suits rides and an active, planned day, and the aquarium suits sea life and a flexible one. Choose by who is travelling.

Can I visit both in one day?

It is possible with a Quick Visit ticket for the park, which includes one ride and has no time limit on your stay. For a 1-day park ticket, give the park its own day.

What does the aquarium's main tank hold?

The Kuroshio Sea tank holds 7,500,000 litres and keeps whale sharks and manta rays alongside many other fish. It is 35 m long, 27 m wide and 10 m deep.

Can I cancel the Klook ticket for JUNGLIA Okinawa?

No. Klook tickets for the park cannot be cancelled once booked, so choose your date carefully. Check the terms on each other attraction's page separately.

Where is Okinawa World?

In Nanjo, southern Okinawa, on the opposite end of the island from the park. It fits a day based in Naha, not a northern itinerary.

What else is worth a stop in the north?

Kouri Island with its bridge and Ocean Tower, and the Nago Pineapple Park on Route 84, are both easy additions to a northern day.
